Handbook - Logistic information
After the successful experiences of 2009 and 2010, the Università di Padova, the LSE IDEAS-Cold War Studies Programme, the European University Institute and the Istituto Italiano di Scienze Umane SUM are jointly convening the 2011 European Summer School on Cold War History at the Università di Padova, 7-10 September 2011.
The programme will consist of workshops and panel sessions focused on submitted research papers, debates on historiography, broad interpretative issues and new research directions. The School faculty will include prominent scholars in the field, among others: Antonio Varsori (Università di Padova), Federico Romero (European University Institute), Mario Del Pero (Università di Bologna), Leopoldo Nuti (Università Roma 3), Silvio Pons (Università di Roma Tor Vergata), Marilyn Young (New York University), Michael Cox, Arne Westad, Arne Hofmann and Svetozar Rajak (London School of Economics).
The Summer School is an excellent opportunity for graduate students to present papers and receive critical feedback from peers and experts in the field. Doctoral students and recent PhDs (no more than 3 years from completion) are invited to submit proposals. We encourage submissions on any aspect of the Cold War, broadly defined. Of particular interest are papers that make use of newly available primary sources. Papers should not exceed 7,000 words (including citations in Chicago style). At the School, each participant will give a 15 minute presentation followed by discussion with the faculty and students.
Applicants should submit a 500 word abstract of the proposed research paper and a brief academic CV (in PDF format) to Wes Ullrich by 25 April 2011 to be considered. Please note in the subject line of your e mail "CW Summer School 2011 - Padova". Notification of acceptance will be made by 20 May 2011. Successful applicants will be expected to email their papers by 20 August 2011.
The accepted students will provide for their own travelling expenses to and from
Padova and pay a €50 registration fee. The School will provide board and lodging at the conference venue.
Please direct all inquiries to the aforementioned email address.
